TEXT: Matthew 1:21
PREACHER: Pastor Bodunrin Timothy
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.
Names in ancient time often reveal a person’s purpose and mission. The name Jesus which in Hebrew language is called Yeshua means “The lord saves”.
Our opening scripture shows that Jesus was conceived and given birth to with a primary mission to save the world from sin.
Man naturally inherit the sin nature from the first Adam which caused separation between God and man. (Genesis 3:23-24)
Genesis 3:23-24
23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
Death began at sin. The first kind of death man experienced is spiritual death. That is, the taken away of the God kind of life (Zoe) as evident in Genesis 3:22.
Genesis 3:22
22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever:
The plan of the devil is far beyond taking away the Bio life because he knows it is temporal. The target is the Zoe life (Gen 3:4)
Gen 3:4
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
Romans 3:23 establishes the fact that all have sinned either by saying, thinking, or doing things that were wrong.
Romans 3:23
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
DESTRUCTIVE EFFECT OF SIN
Sin makes us guilty before God (Gen 3:9-10)
Gen 3:9-10
9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
Sin enslaves man (Romans 6:16)
Romans 6:16
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Sin separates us from God
Because we have missed it on all God commanded us, we are guilty and deserve God’s punishment.
